Bicycle Across the USA

Experience brief

This is something I have wanted to do for several decades. I am retired and without many obligations. When I mentioned the idea to one of my friends (Shawn), he suggested that he take 2 weeks off from work and join me for the first 700 or 800 miles.

With Shawn putting in for vacation time, I know that it is not just a dream anymore... it is a strong possibility.

Getting Through Phoenix

March 26, 2014

When my friend and I discussed our route, it appears that Phoenix will be the largest city we would bike through. I assumed that it would be the most dangerous part of the trip, so I have been researching the best routes through the city. It turns out that, because of the "canal routes" that it may be the easiest (flattest) and safest part of our trip.

For anybody planning on the Southern Tier, the canal and river bike paths are the best way to go. And if you are fortunate to go through Phoenix after a few days of rain, the desert will surprise you with the beauty of the trees and cacti.
